What are people searching for online? What does it mean when thousands or millions of people enter phrases like “cocaine relapse prevention” and “how to quit heroin” into search engines? For what reasons are people turning to online resources for insight and information about addictive substances and addictions treatment, and which resources are they seeking? How can health professionals use this information to better combat the issues of drug and alcohol addicions that affect countless victims?

USDR is proud to present innovative research which tracks and analyzes the online search trends surrounding drug and alcohol addictions. The progressive study found within this website, analyzing over 1,000,000 phrases with over 360,000,000 combined annual searches, provides insight into global and societal tendencies, aiding in the development of successful addiction treatment plans, detox programs, and recovery resources.

Addiction Statistics - Often Searched and Found

Addiction statistics generated through this innovative drug and alcohol research show that 113,423 and 35,025 searches occur annually for the exact phrases “drug information” and “about alcohol”, respectively. Graph 1 below lists the 30 most common two and three word combinations used in “drug and alcohol research” queries. Among these phrases, the generic terms “alcohol” and “drug” are used 50% of the time. The remaining 50% are more substance or behavior specific, such as:

• “prescription drug” - 25,676 occurrences per year
• “about cocaine” - 21,557
• “prescription drug information” - 17,382
• “meth facts” - 15,534
• “drug ultram” - 13,424
• “gambling addiction” - 12,849

It's interesting to note that the terms “facts” and “statistics” are each used seven times throughout the word combinations in Graph 1. One would surmise that most searches on “drug and alcohol research” are performed by professionals, students or family members instead of addicts or alcoholics seeking help.

Graph 2 breaks down the data from the drug and alcohol research to plot the top 100 most prevalent words used in annual online searches. Interestingly, the top substance-specific words of this list are the terms “alcoholism” (53,610), “meth” (47,161) and “cocaine” (42,377).

It's easily ascertained that those using “alcoholism” are looking for facts about alcohol or general alcoholism information, but those using “meth” and “cocaine” may be looking for info ranging from physical drug identification and recipes to abuse and overdose to treatment and recovery centers.
